What To Do When You Are Unemployed On Ghana

It’s very frustrating to find yourself in the “No job” category of life. We make money through work and when you have no job to do, it means you are being restricted from financial freedom. How do you pay the bills? Pay for the family upkeep, more importantly save and invest? It’s obviously impossible! So many things can factor unemployment, you might have just completed college, being laid off from your work for certain reasons or perhaps have your company temporary closed. It can be disheartening when you complete the university or college and find yourself sitting idle without job. As a graduate, after offering your National service, what next? Read on as I take you through what to do when you are unemployed.

Types Of Unemployment In Ghana

✔ Unemployed graduates: Graduate unemployment is effected when a fresh graduate who just completed college and has not been employed yet.

✔ Structural unemployment: A person is considered structurally unemployed when the skills they have do not match that of the modern skills for a company’s development. The person is either laid off from the work to learn new and adaptive skills or leaves the company.

✔ Involuntary unemployment: Involuntary unemployment is just like the structural unemployment. A person is considered involuntarily unemployed when they are forced to leave their job because their skills do not match that of their position in the company.

✔ Frictional unemployment: This type of unemployment occurs when a person leaves their current job, become unemployed while searching for a new job.

✔ Underemployment: This kind of unemployment occurs when a person does not qualify for the work he’s looking for but receives small money for doing other optional things for the company.

✔ Voluntary unemployment: This occurs when a person voluntarily decides not to look for work or just decide to be home.

What To Do When You Are Unemployed In Ghana; Relieving Tips

1. Register your name at the labour commission

The first to think of when you are unemployed is to go and have your name registered at the national labour commission. At the labour commission, registered unemployed persons are considered when employment opportunities are available. In order to be a recognised unemployed person, you should have your name registered. You may be called, get emails and other forms of notification when jobs matching your criteria are available.

2. Be prepared

Always prepare yourself for employment before any employment opportunity comes. Create a well and irresistible CV, prepare your cover letters and learn interview skills. Important documents like CV must be created and kept safely. Most people mistakenly Wait to get employment hint before preparing, that’s a bad idea. Always be prepared to grab the opportunity head-on, “if you fall to prepare, you prepare to fail” look sharp my dear!

3. Volunteer

If you are unemployed and looking to get employed, it’s good to offer volunteer service. People will get to realise your skills and capabilities and could lead to your employment. Instead of staying home idle, market your skills with a volunteer job, by this you might be recommended by authorities leading to Job opportunities.

4. Build social network

Whiles you are unemployed, build your social network by socializing more. Build good relations with people, socialize more and build strong connections with authorities such as job owners, managers, workers and even friends. Let them know you are unemployed. Send your application letters and CVs to different companies, and do follow-ups as often as necessary.

5. Attend job seminars

It’s good to attend job seminars while you are still unemployed. These seminars tend to be very helpful as it provides job opportunities, entrepreneurial tutorials and better skills to enhance your job searching abilities.

6. Make use of the internet

If you are unemployed, the internet is there for you, make good use of it. There are a whole lot of passive income jobs and even full-time jobs you can do on the internet. Social media marketing, freelancing jobs, YouTube tutorials, podcasting and a lot more internet jobs you can do to earn money whiles at home.

7. Practice Time consciousness

Whiles at home, avoid sleeping till 12 noon, practice time consciousness to keep you from developing lateness to work when you are finally employed. Create a to-do list, schedule your to-do time, practice following them. Set an alarm to wake you up as early as possible. Simply find yourself doing something even if it doesn’t playoff. “The devil finds work for the idle hand” therefore keep yourself busy!
